The difference is about 9.7%. A one-ounce gold coin — a Krugerrand, a Maple Leaf, an American Eagle — contains one troy ounce, 31.1 g. Spot prices for gold and silver are quoted per troy ounce. Converting a gold weight with the ordinary ounce overstates the quantity by roughly a tenth, which at any realistic gold price is a serious error.

American recipes frequently mix weight ounces and fluid ounces in the same ingredient list. “8 oz flour” is a weight; “8 oz milk” is almost always a volume, meaning one cup. Only the first belongs on this page — the second is in the volume converter.
Estimating in your head
