The formula

psi = bar × 14.5037738

A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals and a psi is exactly 6894.757293168 pascals, so the ratio is that quotient — which does not terminate, hence the rounding.

1 bar is 14.5 psi, and one atmosphere is 1.013 bar — close enough that “one bar” and “one atmosphere” are used interchangeably outside precision work.

Espresso

The one place bar is the everyday unit for something that is not a tyre. Machines are advertised by their pump rating, and the brewing figure is lower than the number on the box:

A “20 bar” machine does not brew at 20 bar. That is the pump’s maximum with the outlet blocked; the actual extraction sits near 9.

Ten metres of sea water is almost exactly one bar, which is why diving arithmetic is done in bar and why a full 200 bar cylinder is quoted as 2900 psi.

Estimating in your head

Multiply by 14.5, or multiply by 15 and take off 3%. For a rough figure, doubling and adding a zero’s worth of scale works: 2.2 bar → 2.2 × 15 = 33, minus a bit, gives 32 psi against a true 31.9.
