The formula
joules = kWh × 3,600,000
The factor is exact and easy to derive: a watt is one joule per second, a kilowatt is 1000 joules per second, and an hour is 3600 seconds. So a kilowatt-hour is 1000 × 3600 = 3.6 million joules, or 3.6 megajoules.
Why the kilowatt-hour exists at all
It looks like an awkward compound unit, and it is — but it is the natural one for electricity because a meter measures power continuously and bills for the integral.
The name states the definition: a kilowatt, sustained for an hour.

A litre of petrol carries about four times a person’s daily food energy — though a car converts only a fraction of it into motion, and a body is considerably more efficient than that.

Multiply by 3.6 and add six zeros. Or work in megajoules: kWh × 3.6 is MJ directly, and MJ is a friendlier size for anything that is not an electricity bill.
