The formula

minutes = seconds ÷ 60

The answer usually wants reading as minutes and seconds rather than as a decimal. The whole number is the minutes; multiply what is left by 60 to get the seconds. 200 seconds is 3.333 minutes, which is 3 minutes and 20 seconds.

The decimal trap

1.5 minutes is 1:30, not 1:50. A decimal minute is not the same as a minute-and-seconds reading, and reading one as the other is the most common error here:

Why sixty

Sixty comes from Babylonian base-60 arithmetic, chosen because 60 divides evenly by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 — more small factors than any smaller number. It survived into hours and minutes through Greek astronomy and has outlasted every attempt to decimalise it, including the French Republican calendar’s ten-hour day.

That divisibility is still doing work: a third of an hour is exactly 20 minutes, and a third of 100 of anything is not exact at all.

Estimating in your head

Divide by 6 and shift the decimal point. 400 seconds ÷ 6 is 66.7, so 6.67 minutes — which is 6 minutes 40 seconds.
