Smaller, and transparency survives
This is the conversion that costs nothing. WebP keeps the alpha channel PNG carries, so a logo with a transparent background stays transparent — and the file gets substantially smaller. Google’s own comparison put lossless WebP at around 26% below PNG; in practice, for screenshots and interface graphics, 30–40% is common.
Turn quality down and the saving becomes dramatic, at the cost of the exactness PNG guarantees. For a screenshot going into documentation, quality 0.85 is usually indistinguishable at a fraction of the size. For a diagram that will be zoomed into, or a logo that must be pixel-exact, keep it high.
Support is no longer a reason to hesitate
WebP is supported by every current browser — the last holdout, Safari, added it
in version 14 (2020). What still lags is desktop software: some older image
editors and office suites will not open a .webp file, so keep a PNG of
anything that has to be openable by other people.
What is not carried over
An animated PNG (APNG) converts to a single still frame here, because the canvas this page uses holds one image at a time. Metadata and colour profiles are dropped along with it.
