What AVIF is, and why it will not open
AVIF stores an image as a single frame of AV1 video. That is what makes it so small — commonly half the size of a JPG at the same visual quality — and also why so little software opens it: an AVIF decoder means an AV1 decoder.
Browsers got there first. Chrome added support in 2020, Firefox in 2021, Safari in version 16 (2022). Desktop applications have followed slowly and unevenly, so a file saved from a modern website may well not open in the software you want to use it in.
The conversion depends on your browser
This page decodes AVIF using your own browser’s decoder, so if the file opens in your browser it will convert here. On a browser without AVIF support, the file cannot be read and the page will say so rather than produce something wrong.
Expect a larger file
JPG cannot match AVIF’s compression, so the result will usually be noticeably bigger — often around twice the size at comparable quality. That is the price of a file everything can open. AVIF is also lossy, so this is a second lossy pass: keep quality at 0.85 or above unless size matters more than fidelity.
