The formula

square feet = ping × 35.583175

One ping is 400/121 m², and one square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², so the ratio is 35.5831749313… — a rounding, since the two definitions do not divide evenly.

The number this page exists for

1 坪 = 35.58 平方呎. That is the only figure needed to read a Hong Kong listing in Taiwanese terms, or the reverse. Taiwan quotes property in ping; Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and Canada quote it in square feet.

And the reverse, at the sizes Hong Kong listings actually use:

A 1000 sq ft Hong Kong flat and a 28 ping Taipei apartment are the same floor area.

But they are not measuring the same thing

Both markets quote an area that includes more than the floor you walk on, and they do it differently:

TaiwanHong Kong
Headline figure權狀坪數 (registered)saleable area, since 2013
Includes common areasyes — the 公設比, often 30%+no, since the 2013 rules
Includes internal wallsyesyes
Older listingssamegross floor area, 20–30% larger

So a Taipei 30 ping with a 32% 公設比 has about 20.4 ping of private space — 726 sq ft — while a Hong Kong 1000 sq ft quoted as saleable area is closer to 1000 sq ft of private space. The raw conversion says they are 1068 and 1000 square feet; the honest comparison says the Hong Kong flat is larger.

Pre-2013 Hong Kong listings quoting gross floor area are the other way round, and are the reason the saleable-area rule exists.

Estimating in your head

Multiply by 36 and take off a little, or multiply by 35 and add 2%. 30 ping × 36 is 1080 against a true 1067.5 — about 1.2% high, which is close enough to compare two listings and not close enough to plan a floor.
