Public and private addresses
The address above is your public address: the one every site you visit sees. It usually belongs to your router or your provider’s network, not to your computer.
Your device also has a private address — something beginning 192.168.,
10. or 172.16.–172.31. — which exists only inside your own network and
means nothing outside it. That is the one to use when connecting to a printer
or another machine at home, and it is not visible from here.
IPv4 and IPv6
An address with colons in it, such as 2404:6800:4012::200e, is IPv6. Many
connections now have both, and which one a site sees depends on how it and your
network are configured — so this page can show a different address from another
IP checker without either being wrong.
The location is approximate, and often wrong
Geolocation maps an address block to wherever its owner registered it. For a home connection that usually lands within the right city or region. For mobile data it can be the operator’s gateway, hundreds of kilometres away, and for a VPN it is wherever the exit server is. Nothing here is derived from GPS, and none of it is precise enough to identify an address.
The browser rows are what your own browser volunteers to every site you visit, with no lookup at all. A mismatch between the timezone your browser reports and the one your IP suggests is the usual sign of a VPN.
Why this tool needs a server
Everything else in this catalogue runs entirely in your browser. This one cannot: the address you are asking about is the one a server sees, which is by definition not something the browser can read.
