Peak normalisation changes every sample by one gain. It does not measure perceived loudness (LUFS) or compress the dynamics. Decoding, gain adjustment and encoding happen on this device. The audio is not uploaded.
What peak normalisation changes
The Tool finds the sample with the greatest absolute amplitude, then applies one fixed gain to every sample in every channel. A target of −1 dBFS leaves one decibel of sample headroom. Quiet sections, loud sections and stereo balance keep the same relationship because there is no automatic volume riding or compression.
Peak level is not perceived loudness
Two recordings can reach the same peak and still sound very different in loudness. Peak normalisation does not measure LUFS, turn down isolated transients, or make speech consistently loud. Use loudness normalisation or dynamics processing when that is the actual goal.
The reading is a sample peak in the decoded 44.1 kHz working buffer, not an inter-sample true-peak measurement. MP3 encoding can create slightly higher decoded peaks of its own, so leave additional headroom when the output has a strict ceiling.
Local processing and output
The browser decodes the source to 44.1 kHz PCM, applies the gain during export, and encodes WAV or MP3 on this device. WAV is uncompressed 16-bit PCM; MP3 is smaller but lossy. The recording is not uploaded.
